Dear Friends, A handful of times in the last few weeks, we've been able to host great Pittsburgh musicians from the Alphabet City stage. These concerts, streamed live via our virtual programming channel, are always such a mood booster and a welcome opportunity to gather together for some great tunes. I'm excited to keep this momentum going with Jazz Poetry 2020 and to welcome to the stage—and live streamed to you—Pittsburgh's Thoth Trio (Ben Opie, Paul Thompson, and David Throckmorton) to debut their new work, Meditations on Quarantine. Composed by Ben Opie and written entirely during the pandemic, Meditations is a suite of new music that captures the composer's experiences and interests throughout quarantine. Written in a time of uncertainty, the suite explores the outcomes when musicians are forced to innovate, re-examine, and push the boundaries of their creativity. This program also features readings from national poets Natalie Diaz, Richard Blanco, Joy Katz, and Asieh Amini, an Iranian exiled writer-in-residence currently living in Norway. The poets will similarly read new work that reflects on both the intersection of isolation, exile, and disconnection, as well as the creativity and opportunity of this moment in time. |
