Experience the music of rural South America

CITY OF ASYLUM @ ALPHABET CITY PRESENTS
TIERRA ADENTRO
In the Depths of the Land

Thursday, October 10 @ 7:00 PM
FREE!
City of Asylum @ Alphabet City
40 W. North Avenue

This fall, City of Asylum is proud to present four concerts celebrating music from around the world. Our World Music Series opens with an evening of songs from different regions of rural South America, performed by internationally acclaimed artists Raquel Winnica Young and Dieter Hennings-Yeoman.

This program features folk styles seldom heard in the U.S. including zambas, carnavalitos, cuecas and valses, and the chilena from Oaxaca, based on a Chilean rhythm. These songs feature poetry and lyrics by prominent 20th century South American and Mexican songwriters who were inspired by the life of the "unheard" people who live and work the fields of foreign and desolate lands.

Equally comfortable performing early music, new music and chamber music, Ms. Raquel Winnica Young's career has taken her to concert halls throughout the Americas and Europe. With Quantum Theater she performed in Maria de Buenos Aires, AinadamarThe Winter's Tale and the world premier of Looking for Violeta, about the life of Chilean singer song-writer Violeta Parra.  Born in Córdoba, Argentina, Ms. Winnica Young holds a degree from the Instituto de Arte del Teatro Colon and an Artist Diploma from Duquesne University. She is Adjunct Faculty in Voice at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The musical endeavors of Dieter Hennings Yeomans (Mexico) span from new music on guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar, and theorbo. Mr. Hennings has been a soloist with Canada's New Music Concerts Ensemble, Orchestra of Lecce, Italy, The Riverside Symphony of NYC, Eastman BroadBand Ensemble, Julliard's 415 Early Music Ensemble, Guanajuato and Monterrey Symphony Orchestras, among many others. Mr. Hennings is a resident artist at the East Coast Composers Ensemble and the Eastman Broad Band Ensemble, with whom he maintains an active performing schedule.

At City of Asylum, we want our events to be welcoming and accessible to all people.
All floors of City of Asylum @ Alphabet City are wheelchair accessible. Thanks to the generous support of RAD, we also have hearing assistive systems available for all programs, by advance request.

If you have questions or are in need of accommodations, please contact us.
