5:00PM Film Screening

7:30PM Panel Discussion and Closing Remarks

(Featuring advocates, experts, and educators engaging in discussion about Trans Rights, Gender Affirming Care, and the lived experience of the LGBTQIA+ Community)

Please join the IFF in celebrating our vibrant local LGBTQIA+ community for a three-part day of togetherness, sharing, and community building centered around the film 20,000 Species of Bees. The film is a gorgeous coming-of-age tale about a young trans girl's sunbaked summer amongst her great aunt's apiary in the Basque countryside and the ways that experience shapes her identity and her relationship with her family. 20,000 Species of Bees is not just a film about a transgender child, but an intergenerational portrait about identity and acceptance in the family; about the construction of gender relationships; tradition and change; but above all about the need to be loved just as we are.

The first event is a resource fair and reception highlighting the many local associations, organizations, and providers who help bring us all together and keep us safe. There will be local honey to sample, as well as a delicious spread of meat, fish, cheese, and snacks from Spain and France, generously and lovingly provided by Chantal's Cheese Shop.

Following the reception will be the film screening at 5:00pm in McConomy Auditorium. 20,000 Species of Bees is 128 minutes long and is in Spanish, Basque, and French with English subtitles; tickets can be purchased here.

After the screening, audience members will head over to Danforth Lounge and Conference room to enjoy some more snacks and a thoughtful and well-led panel discussion about the film and the experiences of our trans community members.

An unparalleled novel about money, power, intimacy, and perception, Trust engages the reader in a quest for the truth while confronting the deceptions that often live at the heart of personal relationships, the reality-warping force of capital, and the ease with which power can manipulate facts.

"To me, one of the most fascinating formal problems in literature is point of view," Diaz says, "because taken to its ultimate limit, I think it's also an ethical problem, since it's related to power… How much about your characters do you know? How far into situations or people can you see? Is it right, just to solve a narrative problem or achieve an effect, to break the laws you had set for yourself?" His Pulitzer-winning Trust is comprised of four distinct sections with four points of view – playing with the trust between reader and narrator.

Copies of Trust, along with other titles by Hernan Diaz, are available from White Whale Bookstore.
We're delighted to welcome you back to a newly renovated Carnegie Music Hall for this event! Please purchase tickets online, or call our Box Office at 412-622-8866 during our hours of 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

FOUR DAUGHTERS
Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania
Tunisia, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia |  2023  |  Arabic | 110 min

Thursday, March 21st  |  7PM
@ Kelly Strayhorn Theater

Oscar-nominated documentary Four Daughters depicts the struggles of both motherhood and sisterhood in a land where the meaning of loyalty inherent to family ties changes almost daily. Placing a single family's traumatic past on full display, we see firsthand a grand attempt to come to terms with the destructive influence of radicalized religion through the medium of film. Two actresses take the role of Ghofrane and Rahma—the vanished daughters of Olfa Hamrouni, having disappeared years prior after being radicalized by extremists from the Islamic State. Another actress plays Olfa herself, in scenes deemed far too painful to reenact. The rest of the cast is self-played, and grieving, in an enthralling, never-before-seen film-within-a-film constitution.

This event includes:
  • Opening Night Reception with delicious Tunisian Food catered by Salem's Market!
  • Post Screening Discussion moderated by CMU Professor Nevine Abraham
  • Additional events: Hands-on Acting Workshop
                                 Date & Time: Saturday March 23rd 1pm

The Peasants | Friday, March 22nd @ 7:00PM | Harris Theater, 809 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, USA

"The Peasants," inspired by Władysław Reymont's Nobel Prize-winning novel, unfolds in Lipce, a village ensnared by tradition and patriarchy. It follows Jagna, torn between lovers amidst societal conflicts—wealthy versus poor, bold versus timid, truth versus deceit. Unique to this film is its visual storytelling; every frame is a hand-painted masterpiece, marking a distinctive achievement in animation by the production studio. This artistic choice enriches the narrative, offering an unparalleled cinematic experience.

CMUIFF is honored to present The Peasants. Join us for an unforgettable evening with a Special Exhibit of Original Oil Production Paintings from The Peasants on display at the Harris Theater,  Zoom Q & A discussion with the directors Hugh and DK Welchman & a Catered Reception!
