Be among the first to experience Quantum's new folk opera in Frick Park

Our world premiere folk opera, Looking for Violeta, opens next week and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you. Filled with beautiful original music, its story weaves together the joy and sorrow of Violeta Parra's life as intricately as one of her famous arpilleras.

We hope you'll join us, and wanted to extend a special invitation for you to be among the first to experience our show at one of our two Pay What You Can previews next week: 8 p.m. on Wednesday July 31st and 9 p.m. on Friday August 2nd. Pay any amount at the door or reserve tickets in advance starting at just $10.

Once you reserve your tickets, be sure to let all your friends know you are coming by RSVP'ing on our Facebook event.

Text by María José Galleguillos
Composition by Emily Pinkerton

Music direction by Daniel Nesta Curtis
Stage direction by Karla Boos

Carolina Loyola-Garcia stars as Violeta Parra, the legendary Chilean folk musician and visual artist. Pablo Neruda introduced her authentic interpretation of Chilean folk music to the world. Joan Baez sang her songs and emulated her activism. The Louvre exhibited her embroideries.

And yet she eludes easy understanding and left us too soon, so we take the attitude of her brother, poet Nicanor Parra, played by internationally acclaimed opera singer Eugene Perry. He serves as our guide as we seek her essence in hauntingly beautiful music composed by Emily Pinkerton. Parra elevated all South American people, her music synonymous with protest movements that resisted dictatorships and improved the lives of thousands.

About the experience:

We've erected a tent – a Quantum first – in Frick Park, representative of Violeta's peñas - where music and dancing, food and drink provided cover for activism. Feel free to picnic in the park before the show, and then join us under the tent (in our comfortable chairs) to celebrate Violeta's inspiration, in six-part harmony with a live four-piece band.

Emily Pinkerton - Composer/Ensemble.

Emily is a singer, composer, and ethnomusicologist who has divided her time between the U.S. and Chile for over 20 years. A member of the award-winning folk trio The Early Mays, she divides her time between performing and teaching. During her extensive time in Santiago, Chile, she became a fan of Violeta Parra and studied the 25-string guitarrón with Alfonso Rubio, Osvaldo Ulloa, and Santos Rubio. This guitarrón features in Looking for Violeta, along with several other traditional Andean instruments, many from her personal collection.

Luz

Friday August 2 through Thursday August 8

On an otherwise nondescript night, taxi driver Luz walks into a police station, claiming that she’s been assaulted. Nearby in a bar, a mysterious woman named Nora is working her magic on Dr. Rossini, recounting how her lover recently jumped out of a taxi. As both situations transpire, the connections between Luz and Nora set the stage for a demonic night from hell for those unfortunate souls who’ve encountered the two women on this particular evening.

Mind-blowingly enough, Tilman Singer’s Luz was made as a student thesis film and is the most audacious and flat-out impressive horror debut in years, a disorienting descent into madness that’s shot on 16mm and genuinely feels like an unearthed ‘70s movie somehow rediscovered and unleashed onto the genre scene. Think Lucio Fulci if he’d moved to Germany and totally lost his already deranged mind and you’ll just be scratching the surface of Singer’s incredibly assured breakthrough gem. —Matt Barone

70 min / Not Rated / Starring Luana Velis, Jan Bluthardt, Johannes Benecke, Lilli Lorenz, Julia Riedler, Nadja Stübiger / Horror Directed by Tilman Singer / Germany 2018
In German and Spanish with subtitles

Quantum makes a world premiere based on the life, music, and multi-dimensional art of Violeta Parra.
Pablo Neruda introduced her authentic interpretation of Chilean folk music to the world.
Joan Baez sang her songs and emulated her activism. The Louvre exhibited her embroideries. And yet she eludes easy understanding, so we take the attitude of her brother, poet Nicanor Parra, and seek her essence in hauntingly beautiful music. Parra elevated all South American people, her music synonymous with protest movements that resisted dictatorships and improved the lives of thousands. She left us too soon, so join us to find her inspiration under a tent - a Quantum first! - in a stunning Citiparks site.

A limited number of subscriptions are available to Quantum's 2019-20 season. Last year we sold out, don't miss your opportunity to join the Q family.

Quantum subscribers enjoy exclusive early access to each of the three shows - Looking for Violeta, Shakespeare's Will, and Chimerica.

From Bangkok to Bogotá: two debut novelists in conversation

Debut Novelists:
Pitchaya Sudbanthad & Ingrid Rojas Contreras

Monday, July 15
7 p.m.

City of Asylum @ Alphabet City
40 W. North Avenue

FREE!

What do two debut authors from opposite sides of the world have in common? How is their work informed by culture, family narratives, secrets, and tradition?  Debut novelists Pitchaya Sudbanthad and Ingrid Rojas Contreras visit City of Asylum to explore these very questions. The authors will read, discuss, and take questions from the audience at this celebration of cross-cultural stories and the thrill of publishing a first novel!

Pitchaya Sudbanthad is a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellow in Fiction. His debut novel, Bangkok Wakes to Rain, was published in February 2019 by Riverhead (US) and Sceptre (UK).

Ingrid Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Her debut novel, Fruit of the Drunken Tree, was the California Book Award Silver Medal Winner and a New York Times Editor's Choice. She is working on a family memoir about her grandfather, a curandero from Colombia who it was said had the power to move clouds.
