American Delirium

(90 min run-time)

From award-winning novelist Argentine Betina González, American Delirium is a dizzying, luminous English-language debut about an American town overrun by a mysterious hallucinogen and the collision of three unexpected characters through the mayhem. Keen readers will catch many direct references to the city of Pittsburgh throughout the novel, inspired by Betina's time in the city. Betina González will be joined in conversation with American Delirium translator Heather Cleary and Pittsburgh-based author Anjali Sachdeva.

Betina González is the bestselling author of several novels and short story collections, for which she has won several awards, including the prestigious Premio Tusquets. American Delirium is her first book to be published in English. González earned her MFA in bilingual creative writing at the University of Texas at El Paso and her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She lives in Buenos Aires and teaches at the University of Buenos Aires and New York University Buenos Aires.

Anjali Sachdeva’s short story collection, All the Names They Used for God, is the winner of the 2019 Chautauqua Prize. It was named a Best Book of 2018 by NPR, Refinery 29, and BookRiot, longlisted for the Story Prize, and chosen as the 2018 Fiction Book of the Year by the Reading Women podcast. The New York Times Book Review called the collection "strange and wonderful," and Roxane Gay called it, "One of the best collections I’ve ever read. Every single story is a stand out." Sachdeva is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and has taught writing at the University of Iowa, Augustana College, and Carnegie Mellon University. She currently teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and in the MFA program at Randolph College.

Heather Cleary translated César Rendueles’s Sociophobia and Sergio Chejfec’s The Planets and The Dark, among other novels and poetry collections. Her translations have been finalists for the National Translation Award and the Best Translated Book Award, and she holds a PhD in Latin American and Iberian cultures from Columbia University. The Puerto Rican Heritage Cultural Ambassadors Program presents
Cucarachita Martina's Musical Adventure

RSVP at https://centropr.nationbuilder.com/CucarachitaMartina

The Puerto Rican Heritage Cultural Ambassadors Program invites you to the premiere of Cucarachita Martina's Musical Adventure.

This new animated short is inspired by Pura Belpré's first picture book, Pérez and Martina: A Portorican Tale, which tells the story of beautiful Martina who is wooed by sneaky Señor Gato, whiney Señor Pato, proud Señor Gallo, sad Señor Grillo, chatty Señor Sapo, and gallant Señor Pérez, the mouse.

Pura Belpré was the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City and author of one of the first Latino children's picture books. Pura was also a cultural activist who studied, re-interpreted and celebrated Puerto Rican folktales and culture. Pura was a talented storyteller and celebrated puppeteer. As the first Puerto Rican librarian in the New York Public Library system, she pioneered the library's work with the Puerto Rican community. The American Library Association has named an award in her honor.

Pura Belpré stated that the story of Pérez and Martina was her, "golden key in opening doors everywhere." She used this story in puppet shows, pantomimes, and plays. It was shown on television and broadcasted over the radio. Pura, Martina and Señores Gato, Pato, Sapo, Gallo, Grillo and Ratoncito Pérez even rode on a float down 5th Avenue for the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

The script for Cucarachita Martina's Musical Adventure was written by the award-winning children's book author Raquel M. Ortiz. Art was created by Tere Marichal, the recipient of two Emmys and the Premio René Marquez. Musical Director Desmar Guevara has created dozens of original scores, songs, and arrangements and has recorded with greats that include Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. The film also features the voices of award winning actress Alejandra Ramos, Mario Mattei and vocalist Elizabeth Pérez. The film was directed and edited by two-time Emmy nominee Waldo Cabrera.

Presenters:

Raquel M. Ortiz, Author of Sofi Paints her Dreams and When Julia Danced Bomba, and Centro curriculum developer
Anibal Arocho, Manager of the Centro Library and Archives
Tere Marichal, Folklorist, author of over thirty books and recipient of two Emmys and the Premio René Marquez.
