"Zimmerman's text is fast-paced, and riddled with the wounds of humanity."
- Pop Dust

At City of Asylum, we believe theater is a powerful and necessary literary art. This reading will be followed by a post-show discussion with the playwright and creative team. Audiences are encouraged to engage with the work, and experience theater's power to spark meaningful dialogue about complex issues.

Simona's father is a mystery. As a child, curious about his life in Latin America before moving to the US, she became obsessed with discovering his secrets, dedicating her life to studying the science of trauma, while her own thoughts and dreams are haunted by a shadowy figure–is her father's past attempting to run her down? A moving and poetic look at family, legacy, and persecution, Simona's Search asks, "Can pain be passed from generation to generation?"

This reading will take place downstairs in our intimate Word Cellar.

Martín Zimmerman is a multi-ethnic, bilingual playwright and screenwriter whose plays include Seven Spots On The SunOn The ExhaleWhite Tie BallThe Making Of A Modern Folk Hero,The Solid Sand Below, and Let Me Count The Ways, and have been produced or developed at The Kennedy Center, Goodman Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse In The Park, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Alley Theatre, Roundabout Underground, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Traverse Theatre, LCT3, New York Theatre Workshop, Victory Gardens Theater, The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Marin Theatre Company, The Playwrights' Center, Alliance Theatre, A.C.T. ISU Lingo Table Event this Thursday!

Hi,

I am reaching out to you on behalf of the International Student Union at CMU.

On Thursday, November 14th 5:00-7:00 pm, ISU will be hosting our 8th semesterly LingoTable event. Students of all levels are welcome to stop in for however long they like to engage in conversations in any language of their choice.

This year we will be offering: Spanish, French, German, Greek, and Mandarin, among others. The event will take place in the University Center Peter-McKenna.

We would truly appreciate if you could let your students know of this event in class so that they can further practice through participation in casual conversation. If possible, you could encourage students by offering some extra credit for your class. It is our hope that they will attend in groups to make it a better experience.

If you have the time, please feel free to join us! We would be more than happy to have expert speakers help us engage in conversations.

Thank you for your time,

Lisa Kailai Han

Angie Cruz, Good Morning America's first book club author, in conversation

Tuesday, November 5
7:00 pm

Nathalie Handal & Angie Cruz

Poet/translator Nathalie Handal and novelist/editor Angie Cruz both write about life in motion. About borders, citizenship, and transcending divisions. About what home means. The two artists visit Alphabet City to read from newly published works and, in an unusual program combining poetry and fiction, discuss how international literature can help us coexist in an increasingly divided world.

Dominicana was recently selected as the first read in Good Morning America's new book club. Watch Angie's GMA interview here.

Nathalie Handal was raised in Latin America, France and the Middle East, and educated in Asia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. She is the author of numerous poetry collections, including The Republics, winner of the Virginia Faulkner Award for Excellence in Writing and the Arab American Book Award. Her work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Guernica Magazine, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Nation, The Irish Times, among others. She is a professor at Columbia University, and writes the literary travel column "The City and the Writer" for Words without Borders magazine. PHOTO © RACHEL ELIZA GRIFFITHS

Angie Cruz is the author of three novels, Soledad and Let It Rain Coffee, a finalist in 2007 for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and, most recently, Dominicana. She has published work in The New York TimesVQR, Gulf Coast Literary Journal, and other publications, and has received fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts, Yaddo, and the MacDowell Colony. She is founder and editor in chief of Aster(ix), a literary and arts journal, and is an associate professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh. PHOTO © ERIKA MORILLO
