LGC Tutoring is hiring!

Good Afternoon,

LGC Tutoring, a program through the Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach, is recruiting students who are interested in tutoring in the local community during the upcoming spring semester.

LGC Tutoring partners with local schools and afterschool programs to provide tutors at no cost to the program. Our tutors are employed through the Leonard Gelfand Center endowment and receive training to work in schools as well as career development mentoring. Over the last year, LGC Tutoring has developed a series of new partnerships with the Pittsburgh Public Schools as well as other community groups providing afterschool academic support. This partnership growth means we need new tutors to support these initiatives. These are work-study eligible positions, that provide students with a great opportunity to support the local community, build professional skills, and share their knowledge in a way that helps develop their ability to communicate with diverse groups.

Please see the attached flyer for more information about the program and share it with your students as you see fit.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Many thanks,

Mimi Wertheimer

Reminder of the Wednesday night movie at the MLRC

Una posibilidad de ver una pel铆cula y ganar cr茅dito extra.

Everyone,

I want to invite you and your students to watch the film Huit Femmes tomorrow at 7:30 in the MLRC.

The cream of France's cinema sirens star in the deliciously candy-colored "8 Femmes", a murder mystery speckled with ornate performances that play up the public image of the actresses themselves. Eight women find themselves snowbound in a house with a dead man--a man each of them (his wife, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, daughters, housekeeper, and chambermaid) had reason to kill. Secrets tumble forth, accusations fly, catfights flare, and confrontations turn steamy, all accompanied by campy performances of 1960s French pop songs.

We look forward to seeing you at the movies.

Announcing MLRC Wednesday Night at the Movies

Everyone,

I am pleased to announce the MLRC Wednesday Night at the Movies film series.  The theme of the series is Gender, Sexuality and Race.  The films will be shown in the MLRC (room 343 Posner Hall) starting at 7:30.  We encourage you and your students to attend.  If you wish to offer extra credit, we can collect names of those in your classes who attend.

• On November 3rd the series will start with the Peruvian film "Retablo". The film follows Segundo, a young boy in Ayacucho in rural Peru whose father No茅  is training him in the family tradition of designing and building religious retablos, but whose secret shatters Segundo's world and everything he believes in. Filmed in Quechua and Spanish with English subtitles.

• On November 10th the series will continue with the French film "Huit Femmes". A murder mystery speckled with ornate performances that play up the public image of the actresses themselves. French with English subtitles.

• On November 17th the series will conclude the term with the Saudi Arabian film "The Perfect Candidate". Maryam, a hardworking young doctor in a small-town clinic, is prevented from flying to Dubai for a conference without a male guardian's approval, she seeks help from a politically connected cousin but inadvertently registers as a candidate for the municipal council. Maryam sees the election as a way to fix the muddy road in front of her clinic, but her campaign slowly garners broader appeal. Arabic with English subtitles.

The series will continue in the Spring with more films on the theme.

We hope to see you and your students at the MLRC.
