ABOUT THE FILM

"The Chambermaid is a genuine approach to the experience of a woman whose destiny is tied to laying an opulent bed, but never being able to rest in it."
– Jorge Negrete, Butaca Ancha

Director Lila Avilés's compelling debut follows Eve, who works long hours as a maid at a luxurious hotel in Mexico City. A young, single mother who travels far to get to her place of work, Eve has aspirations for the future and hopes that her diligence will get her a coveted spot as the cleaner on an executive floor. She enrolls in the hotel's adult education program in her quest for a better life, but quickly discovers that it's not necessarily the most hard-working who get noticed for advancement. Employing striking documentary-style cinematography, coupled with a meditative tone and intimate direction, THE CHAMBERMAID takes us through Eve's daily routine and path to self discovery, which humbly reflects the everyday struggles of laborers in Mexico City.

Wednesday 3/20, CIRP Policy Forum: Former President of Bolivia Jorge Quiroga

Please share broadly…

Just a reminder that our CIRP Policy Forum with former President of Bolivia Jorge Quiroga is this Wednesday, March 20, from 4:45p.m. to 6:00p.m. in Simmons A, Tepper Quad. He will be speaking about China, Venezuela, Corruption, and its Effects on Bolivia and Latin America. Learn more.

We hope you are able to join us!

Bolivian democratic norms and institutions have experienced a systematic erosion in the last years. In October, President Evo Morales will run for office for the fourth time, in blatant contradiction of the constitution he helped to create. How can we understand this democratic decay? According to former Bolivian President Jorge Quiroga, three international processes are part of the explanation: Chinese economic involvement, Venezuelan political interference, and institutional corruption. Bolivia -and other countries in the region- have been at the crossroads of these tendencies, enjoying a boom in exports, following the Venezuelan authoritarian model with indefinite re-elections and mired in corruption scandals. Jorge Quiroga will give an overview of these three tendencies and what is in store in the years ahead.

José Villa Soberón is the sculptor of Cuba's famed sculpture of the former Beatles member John Lennon. Read more about this famous piece:

"It's no surprise that the music of John Lennon and the Beatles was banned from Communist Cuba in the 1960s and 70s. Cuban authorities considered the music "ideological diversionism," and decadent American influence during a time of Revolution.

Young Cubans intrigued by the cultural revolution happening in the US and Europe could sense what they were being denied access, but could get only a small taste of the 60s by quietly listening to smuggled Beatles tapes in dark rooms.

20 years after John Lennon's death, Castro made a complete 180; no longer was his music banned, instead Lennon was to be celebrated as a hero. Castro unveiled a shiny new bronze statue of Lennon in the new John Lennon Park, screened a documentary on Lennon shot by his personal cinematographer, and organized a Lennon tribute concert in 2000.

The reason for honoring this musical icon? "I share his dreams completely. I too am a dreamer who has seen his dreams turn into reality." Lennon was also harassed by the US government in the later years of his life, and Cuba considers him a rebel and a victim; a kindred spirit to Cuba's relationship with the US.

While the glasses have been stolen and vandalized off his face, a security guard at the park who sometimes sits on the bench with Lennon will reportedly put the glasses on the statue if you ask him."
