[PITTSBURGH] Los Mirlos - Legendary Cumbia Amazonica from Peru

Named after a black bird in their native jungle, Los Mirlos are the uncrowned kings of tropical Peruvian Cumbia, or Cumbia Amazonica. The band came together in Lima during the oil boom of the 70s and created a uniquely new and powerful party music inspired by the Anglophone psychedelic rock and surf music of the time.

Join Pandemic and 25 Carrick Ave in this special performance

Fast-forward some 40 years, and the mythical Los Mirlos have traveled and performed in almost every Latin American country, and are still considered essential for the culture of Amazonian Cumbia, not in the last place because of popular compilations such as "Roots of Chicha", "Back To Peru", and "Cumbia Beat Vol. 1".

Songs like 'La Danza de Los Mirlos', 'Sonido Amazónico', 'Lamento en la Selva', 'Muchachita del Oriente', and 'Chinito en Onda' are kept in the memory of many people worldwide, who all danced to them at one point of their life.

The iconic band is well known for the incredible productions of psychedelic Peruvian Cumbia that they have produced since the 70's. Widely known as the mastermind of the Peruvian-Amazonian Cumbia, they are back to the musical scene to share with the world the Peruvian musical history and the value of it.

Jorge Rodriguez Granda and his brothers and cousin, originally from the northeastern jungle town of Moyobamba migrated to Lima back in 1973 where they started the band that was to become one of the cornerstones of Peruvian cumbia (or chicha).

*Making the blind see.... Literally*

We hope that you will join us in supporting a great cause that has literally made the blind see.

Through previous fund-raising efforts the Guatemala mission has literally given a child the gift of sight; making the blind see (see story below)! It is through events like the Run Through Guatemala5k that we can help other children in the orphanage live healthier and happier lives.

"At the young age of seven, Denilson has already experienced a lifetime of challenges and triumphs. A bright, outgoing child who lives in an orphanage in Patzun, Guatemala, Denilson began to lose his sight at age three. Concerned that he would go blind, the nuns from the orphanage visited Guatemalan physicians before coming to the realization that his condition would require health care expertise that could not be found in their home country.

Turning to a group of missionaries from St. Richard Church in Gibsonia, PA, the sisters at the orphanage made a connection with doctors at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. After reviewing his medical records, the specialists knew Denilson would be a good candidate for surgery to stop the progression of the disease and save his eye sight.

Denilson Regains Vision After Rare Diagnosis

With the help of donations from the Gibsonia church, Denilson made the long trip to Pittsburgh. Almost completely blind, he was seen by Kanwal Nischal, MD, FRCOphth, chief of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Adult Motility who diagnosed an acquired ocular condition that caused cataracts, inflammation in the eyes, an opaque cornea and nonfunctioning retinas. He had also lost all depth perception in both eyes. While Denilson's condition was rare, Dr. Nischal knew the visual potential was still there and recommended pediatric strabismus corneal surgery to reverse the damage.

After his surgery, Denilson's eyes began to heal and with that healing came improved eyesight. He began to see and experience things that his younger counterparts had always taken for granted. While still in the United State, Denilson went swimming and rode a bike for the first time. He saw the deep red in trucks he visited at a local fire station and witnessed the bright colors of fireworks. On his way home, he marveled at the sight of the clouds outside of the airplane windows. His friends cheered when he sunk his first ball in a game of playground basketball. And every day he studies his face in the mirror before putting on his first pair of eye glasses, excited about the miracle that he has received thanks to his care at Children's Hospital."

National Immigrant Resilience Day

" In partnership with United We Dream, the Organization of Latin American Students at Robert Morris will be hosting the first ever National Immigrant Resilience Day Rally: Immigrants Make America Great. This rally will discuss the inhumane policies that have disadvantaged undocumented youth and D.A.C.A recipients. We are here to make our campus a safe and inviting place for immigrants and their families. Anyone is welcome to come, so if there was anyway you could send this information to other colleges and universities in the Pittsburgh area, that would be great! If you have any questions please let me know A.S.A.P! Below is our flyer for the rally: "
