Six powerhouse individual jazz musicians come together in big band style to explore the musical connections between the Caribbean, America, Africa, and Latin America. AfroHORN, conceived by Francisco Mora-Catlett during his time in the Sun Ra Arkestra, is a musical exploration of Henry Dumas' short story, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and the metaphor of the Afro Horn, an instrument so mythically potent that it simultaneously unites and empowers.

Francisco Mora-Catlett and his New York-based jazz ensemble, draws on the metaphor of the Afro Horn, creating a stirring evening of Afro Cuban sounds, world music styles, and avant-garde jazz. Learn more.

Featured musicians: Román Díaz (percussion); Alex Harding (baritone saxophone); Francisco Mora-Catlett (drums); Sam Newsome (soprano saxophone); and Aruán Ortiz (Piano)

"Led by the drummer and composer Francisco Mora-Catlett, AfroHORN seeks a mystical but earthy vision of rhythm and folklore, inspired not only by Afro-Cuban music but also the Sun Ra Arkestra, in which Mr. Mora-Catlett played in the 1970s…"
—The New York Times

Francisco Mora Catlett is a drummer, composer, and educator. He began his musical career in Mexico City where he worked as a session musician for Capitol Records 1968-1970. He left Mexico City with Sun Ra in 1973 and worked with him until 1980.

His work explores the themes of jazz and creativity while highlighting the work of his parents, sculptor Elizabeth Catlett and painter Francisco Mora Senior. He has established his own label AACE in order to distribute several of these projects.
