In partnership with the August Wilson Cultural Center's Familiar Boundaries, Infinite Possibilities exhibition, Brooklyn-based artist Lizania Cruz will lead a 60-minute workshop at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City.  The workshop will include a reading of two zines and a hands-on poster making activity reflecting the themes and stories from her project We the News.

Inspired by the "I AM A MAN" poster designed for the landmark 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers, the workshop posters will honor and affirm dignity for immigrants. Lizania co-creates spaces of sanctuary through the use of language, personifying the role storytelling play in uniting, empowering, and building community.

About We the News:

In the midst of an era fueled by generalizations and incendiary rhetoric, how do we share immigrant stories in a way that is reflective and representative of their complexity and humanity? Through a series of story circles, immigrants are able to share their diasporic experiences and anecdotes of their rituals and traditions. Each story circle is documented in a zine shared at the We the News newsstand.
