In 2019, City of Asylum celebrated its 15th anniversary. The true highlight of that year for me was a reunion of our former exiled writers-in-residence. For many of our staff and audience members, including myself, the reunion was our first chance to meet these remarkable writers in person. Throughout the weekend and my conversations with our former writers, I was struck that many of them still think of Pittsburgh as home. I think this sentiment is a testament to all of you, our amazing community of neighbors and supporters, who have made our writers feel so welcome during their time in this city. I am excited that our virtual channel allows us to share this wonderful event with you again. All five writers read from their work, and join City of Asylum co-founder Henry Reese on stage for questions and conversation. They reminisce about their time in Pittsburgh and reflect on the importance of the sanctuary program for their lives and careers. The pandemic has been difficult for writers all over the world, as governments have used public health restrictions as an excuse to crack down on dissenting voices. As we worked to prepare the program for broadcast online, it was particularly moving to hear Khet Mar talk about leaving Burma at a moment when history appears to be repeating itself there. I hope you'll join us on Tuesday for this special event. Warmly, Abby Lembersky Director of Programs |
