This talk describes an ongoing ten-year study of dramatic social change and infectious disease transmission in NW coastal Ecuador, funded by NIH and NSF. Our interdisciplinary team is following how construction of a paved road in a previously roadless area changes social life and health in 24 rural villages and a metropolitan center. I will discuss some of our successes and failures in confronting the inevitable scalar challenges of examining transmission across space, time, human networks, and environmental reservoirs.

Jim Trostle is Dana Research Professor and Chair of Anthropology at Trinity College, Hartford. Trained in anthropology and epidemiology, he has studied chronic and infectious disease risk, transmission, and therapy in more than 20 countries. He has consulted for organizations like the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, most recently serving as a member of an Expert Panel, the Thematic Reference Group on Environment, Agriculture and Infectious Diseases, for WHO’s Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases.
