| | | | Click here to watch our latest 50th Anniversary Video: Women of Centro. | March may be in full swing but do👏🏽 not👏🏽 forget👏🏽 that it is also Women's History Month! It is hard to summarize the profound impact the women at CENTRO have had on what we do, but there is always something they have in common:
They are ambiciosas 🏆, atrevidas 🦸🏽♀️, independientes 💁🏽♀️, inteligentes 📚, inquisitivas 🧐, rule-breaking 🔨, boundary-pushing 🏋🏽, poderosas 💪🏽💅
Here at CENTRO, we are fortunate to have a rich legacy of women who have made significant contributions to the fabric of our organization and the larger Puerto Rican community. Current Directora, Yarimar Bonilla, may have been named the first woman to actively fill the role, but CENTRO has been ready for a female Director for decades. (Dr. Maria Josefa Canino was nominated by CENTRO staff to serve as Director **three times** during her tenure!)
Since our founding, CENTRO has remained a progressive institution producing radical and bold work that wouldn't be possible without the women who have passed through our doors. As Camille Rodríguez, Former Director of Operations, said in our Women of CENTRO video, CENTRO was "community-based and focused, and it wasn't afraid to challenge the prevailing intellectual paradigms."
And you already know, CENTRO siempre está listo for a challenge! As we look to the rest of the month and year, we ask ourselves how can we continue to challenge the prevailing paradigms that exist today? We aim to continue highlighting the vital role that women have played at CENTRO and in the Puerto Rican community starting with our Artistic Research Resident Fellow on Feminism, Diasporican Art In Motion - Artist of the Month, and our upcoming events like the opening night of the exhibition Ida y Vuelta: Experiencias de la migración en el arte puertorriqueño contemporáneo!
And lastly….remember to follow us on social media 📲 @centropr | | | | | José Ortiz Pagán, Exit, 2015 | CENTRO Announces the opening of Ida y Vuelta: Experiencias de la migración en el arte puertorriqueño contemporáneo with Hunter East Harlem Gallery this Spring | Don't miss Ida y Vuelta: Experiencias de la migración en el arte puertorriqueño contemporáneo (Arrivals and Departures: Migration Experiences in Contemporary Puerto Rican Art) in partnership with Hunter East Harlem Gallery, from March 30th, 2023 through September 30th.
