Coro Latinoamericano, Dec. 16

Pittsburgh’s Coro Latinoamericano—one of the nation’s only secular choirs performing in Spanish—is teaming up with the First Unitarian Universalist Choir & students at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music for a special holiday concert—Paz y Armonía (Peace and Harmony), Sunday December 16 at 3:00pm.

Directed by award-winning cellist, Ábner Jairo García, from Morelia Mexico, the groups will present an evening of traditional Spanish & Latin American holiday and popular music, with special songs for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa too!

Date & Time: Sunday, Dec. 16th, at 3:00PM

Location: First Unitarian Church, 605 Morewood Ave., Pgh, PA 15213.

Admission is free although donations will be accepted. The concert is family friendly; the venue is handicap accessible.

This presentation explores the history of feminist and other societal mobilization around population policy, particularly "mass sterilization," in Mexico and Brazil. Against the transnational backdrop of Cold War geopolitics, it traces the role of social movements, national governments, and transnational networks in these histories.

Flamenco classes

Flamenco classes beginning on Wednesday November 7th from 5:00-5:45pm, with the dancer Flor Isava-Machi.

The goal of this class is learn the basic moves to dance a colorful and exciting style of song and dance name Sevillanas, which is typical of the Spanish town of Seville, but they are sung and dance across the Andalucía Region.

But on his way to a community celebration in the Andes, Segundo accidentally discovers his father is gay. The revelation shatters his whole world and cracks form in their bond. Trapped in a homophobic environment, Segundo sees silence as his only option for dealing with his father's secret. 

Retablo is the winner of the Teddy Award (Berlin Film Festival), Outstanding Feature Film (Frameline, San Francisco LGBT Film Fest), Best Feature Film (InsideOut Toronto LGBT Film Festival), and an Official Selection (Seattle Film Festival).

2 - project-LOGUE Extended Deadline

 

project-LOGUE has extended their deadline for art and writing submissions. If you have any art or writing pieces that are in a language besides English, they are accepting submissions of art until November 31st and submissions of writing until November 15th. Please submit if you can!

 

 

 

3 - 98-324: Medical Spanish StuCo

 

Medical Spanish is a StuCo that allows you to learn how to comfortably communicate with Spanish-speaking patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Every class focuses on a new specialty, such as Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, and Cardiology, in addition to reviewing cultural differences and health disparities among Latinos in the US. Through several interactive in-class activities and games students will have the opportunity to engage in Patient-Physician Spanish-spoken role playing, and other games that test the vocabulary and terminology learned in class such as Lotería (Spanish Bingo), Juego de Riesgo (Spanish Jeopardy), Las Charadas (Spanish Charades) and much, much more!

 

It'll be offered next semester on Thursdays from 6:30 - 7:20 PM, for 3 units Pass/Fail.

 

 

 

4 - Yleana Leadership Academy Applications

The Yleana Leadership Academy is interested in recruiting both grads and undergrads for a transformative SAT summer experience that allows them to provide an SAT boot camp, higher order thinking skills development, a leadership academy, an on-campus college experience, and a traditional summer camp to high school aged students. They have locations in Boston, Lynn/Salem/Peabody, NYC, Philadelphia, and Baltimore and are looking for people who would be willing to work hard and have an amazing time creating a summer camp experience for kids!

2 - Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival

The Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival is an event that focuses on developing understanding of cultural commonalities through film.

 

As part of the city-wide celebration, Romero Lives!, their first event will feature the film, Good Manners. It is a Brazilian, horror film directed by Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra. A short description can be found below:

 

Clara, a lonely nurse, is hired by the mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. The two women develop a strong bond, but a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.

The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), Latino Community Center of Pittsburgh (LCC), and the Women and Girls Foundation will be having a rally November 1st at 11:54am in Schenley Plaza. It will be a memorial for Dia de los Muertos as well as a rally for equality in pay. More information is available on the flyer below:
