The Story

My name is Rosana Guernica and I am a third-year student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On September 20th, Puerto Rico, my home, was hit by a category five hurricane, leaving the island and its people completely devastated. It has been an incredibly difficult and emotionally weighted time for all of us. We are desperate to help the island and don't seem to know how. No one person can solve these issues. No one government can help the island. There is money being raised that won't keep people from dying, that won't get people the help that they need in time. The supplies being collected are being held in inventory throughout the US. By the time normal distribution channels open, it will be too late for the people who needed it the most.

It is time to come together take action. It is time to help the most vulnerable before it is too late. There are infants who need formula, diabetic victims without insulin, and cancer patients in need of immediate evacuations. I have been in contact with doctors and first responders on the ground to get a better sense of what specific items are needed. They communicated a need for portable gasoline containers, flashlights, baby food, baby wipes, diapers, rice and beans, D cell and AAA batteries, water, medicine, and medical supplies.

On Wednesday, October 4th, Dr. Alejandro Rodriguez and I were able to complete our first mission down to the island. We delivered 1,000 lbs of medical supplies to the Federico Trilla Hospital in Carolina and the Universitario Hospital Pediatrico in San Juan. We evacuated 6 passengers, cancer and dialysis patients in need of immediate attention, along with their respective caretakers (please see fundraiser updates for specific information). All passengers have either been hospitalized or are under physician care. Their families cannot thank you enough for all of your support.

We are now organizing for the second humanitarian mission, which I hope to complete this weekend. Our plane will be able to carry 1,500 lbs of supplies and return with 30 patients and evacuees. On this next mission, I am fortunate enough to be joined by three other Puerto Rican CMU students and a CMU alumni and staff member: Gabriel Ostolaza (CIT '18), Jose López (Dietrich 2019), Javier Spivey (CFA '19) Ivan Cao-Berg (MCS '09).

Puerto Rico needs your help, we need your help. Any donation is appreciated. Please share this link with your contacts. If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of the organizers:
