The 2016 Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival, organized by The Humanities Center, continues to celebrate the art of filmmaking and the themes that define our contemporary social landscape. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the 2016 edition of the festival (March 17 – April 3) will bring the ubiquitous and intimate theme of Conflict to life through the power of new, independent, and award-winning films from around the world. From race relations in America and the role of vigilantes on both sides of the Mexican border to ongoing unrest in the Middle East and censorship in North Korea, this year’s powerfully relevant selections will introduce you to compelling “Faces of Conflict” from local, national, and international spheres and provoke poignant discussions about the turbulent nature of conflict and its impact on global communities.

The festival’s enduring focus over the past nine years has been dedicated to creating events that are more than just screening experiences by encouraging its audiences to participate in Q & A sessions with international directors, engage with live cultural performances, and taste delicious ethnic cuisine from eateries in our very own Pittsburgh. With special regards concerning the often sensitive and emotional issues surrounding the theme of Conflict, these highly engaging components will provide unique opportunities to hold thoughtful, constructive conversations with experts in the field, artists, and neighbors about global conflicts and resolutions and in the process, evolve and redefine our personal perspectives. This year’s festival will be sure to move us and enrich us by helping us better comprehend the unique ways in which “Faces of Conflict” shape our modern world and ourselves.
