Opportunity to volunteer working with Hispanic/Latin@ children at CMU

Hola,

Below you will find information on an opportunity to volunteer to help Hispanic/Latin@ children from the Pittsburgh region. An orientation meeting for interested individuals who have not volunteered for us in the past will take place at CMU on Wednesday, March 4, 4:30-5:00 pm in the MLRC, Porter Hall 225C.Please fill out the interest form (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VoluntariadoCirculo) prior to attending the meeting if you are interested in participating as a volunteer this term. Volunteers who have worked with us in the past may simply reply to this email indicating their interest to participate and whether or not their clearances are current.

Please note that per PA Laws governing CMU, all volunteers must have applied for their clearances prior to the start of the workshop on march 15th.

If you cannot attend, but would still like to volunteer, please fill out the interest form and also contact us by replying to this email. Feel free to forward this email to your student groups or anyone else who might be interested in participating.

Thank you.

You are receiving this email because of your expressed interest in volunteering for El Circulo Hispanic Studies Outreach Program, or because you have been suggested by a member of the community as an eligible candidate.

El Circulo Juvenil de Cultura is a volunteer-based not-for-profit community enterprise working with Hispanic/Latin@ children in Pittsburgh in the preservation and development of their Spanish skills and cultural knowledge.  We do this each term through workshops held on Sunday afternoons at CMU.

El Circulo's Spring workshop will take place on Sunday afternoons, Mar. 15May 3, 2:00 - 4:00 pm., under the theme of Digital Learning. Volunteers are typically native or hereditary Spanish speakers, or are students with an intermediate to advanced command of the Spanish Language. Experience working with children ages 6-12 is a plus, but not necessary. Volunteers are expected to attend as many workshop sessions as they can, and should have or be able to obtain Child Abuse , PA Criminal, and FBI fingerprint Clearances. The Leonard Gelfand Center will assist in the process of obtaining clearances for CMU students.

Volunteers will devote their time to assisting the instructors/facilitators with the children. Other opportunities to volunteer "behind the scenes" for El Circulo include website/blog developer/writer, grant-writer, logistics/events coordinator, photographer/videographer, community liaison, etc.

Internship and academic credits are available for volunteers who are majors/minors in the Hispanic Studies program at CMU.

Muchas gracias,

Felipe (on behalf of Círculo Juvenil)

Dog in the Manger

by

Lope De Vega and David Johnston; directed by Dennis Schebetta

Date: Thursday, February 12 – 22, 2015

Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8PM

Sunday Matinees at 2PM

Location: Charity Randall Theatre, 4200 Fifth Ave

For more information: Call 412-624-PLAY or visit www.play.pitt.edu

In this sexy new translation of a Spanish golden age classic, Lope de Vega's romantic comedy of class and desire sizzles to life. Set in luxurious 17th century Naples, a haughty Countess, Diana, rejects her many suitors and falls in love instead with her handsome young secretary, Teodoro, who is actually in love with Diana’s maid. A hilarious tug of war ensues as Diana’s private struggle nearly drives Teodoro mad. Along the way, she must prevent the servants from figuring out the truth and fend off the advances of two ridiculous gentleman suitors. Will the Countess be able to scheme a plot to end all plots in order to get her man (probably, this is a comedy)?

Director Dennis Schebetta is a writer, director, actor and teacher of film and theatre. He won the Ellen Weiss Kander Award for the Steeltown Film Factory Competition for his script MY DATE WITH ADAM. The film premiered at the 2013 Three Rivers Film Festival and has since been an official selection of the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, The Phoenix International Film Festival, Sci-Fi London Film Festival, 4th Annual Robot Film Festival and won Best Comedy Short at the 2014 High Desert International Film Festival.

Graduate Assistant Director Julian Stetkevych is a Teaching Fellow and M.F.A. candidate in Performance Pedagogy. He was an actor and teaching artist in New York City for 8 years, including private audition coaching and teaching with the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival.

For more information, photos, or to speak with the artists, please contact Josh Storey at 412-624-0933 or jstorey@pitt.edu.

            Location: 4217 Posvar Hall

Discussion with Dennis Jett. Author of American Ambassadors: The Past, Present, and Future of America's Diplomats

Ever wonder who becomes an American ambassador and what they do? Professor (and former ambassador) Dennis Jett will explain that and also describe how the country to which a person is sent as ambassador can be influenced by money, religion, politics, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation. While some say that communications technology has made the role of an ambassador unnecessary and largely symbolic, Jett will explain why they are more important than ever.

Dennis Jett is a professor of international affairs at Pennsylvania State University. A former career diplomat, he served 28 years in the State Department in Argentina, Israel, Malawi and Liberia, on the National Security Council and was US Ambassador to Peru and Mozambique.
