A brilliant coming-of-age story that is funny, subtle, and touching. Growing up in a bourgeois house in Lima, 8 year old Cayetana spends a lot of time with herself. She is perhaps the most morose little girl seen on screen idolizing Peruvian independence heroes. Lurking in the background of the story are the attacks of the communist Shining Path guerrillas. The film could very well work as an allegory for feelings of ambivalence towards an uncertain future, but there is still much to enjoy. Spanish with English subtitles. PG – Parental Guidance
