Center for Latin American Studies
Upcoming Events
Reminder: April 2013 CLAS Graduates
In order to have the Latin American Studies certificate/related concentration recorded on the transcripts of students who finish the certificate program, the University requires each student to complete a Certificate Graduation Application. This application is separate from the form that you will complete for your degree/major.
Those graduating in April 2013 have a deadline of Thursday, January 17, 2013 to complete a Certificate Graduation Application form without paying a late fee.
Attention undergraduates: please remember to submit 2 research papers/projects that clearly demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Latin American issues in at least two different academic disciplines. These papers may be assignments that are submitted as part of your coursework, such as final term papers reflecting a significant command of the subject. If a research paper is completed that is clearly interdisciplinary in nature, it may be considered instead of the two separate papers. Works may be submitted at any point, but must be submitted to CLAS no later than the last semester before graduation.
Late applications are accepted after the deadline but the University will impose a late fee. The amount of the fee increases with the delay in submission.
Please see Julian Asenjo (4207 Posvar Hall) for an application or drop by our offices (4200 Posvar Hall) to pick one up. Papers and graduation applications should be submitted to the attention of Julian Asenjo, CLAS Academic Advisor.

Lectures
"Local Struggles, Transnational Frameworks: The Congress for Cultural Freedom and the Cultural Cold War in Latin America, 1950s-1960s," a lecture by Jorge Nállim (Associate Professor of History, University of Manitoba)
This presentation will focus on the history of the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) in Latin America during the 1950s-1960s. The CCF was an international anti-communist organization of intellectuals created in 1950 as part of American Cold War cultural policy, funded and supported by the United States through different channels. The presentation will discuss the CCF's networks in Latin Americana (national branches, affiliated individuals, publications), placing them within new theoretical frameworks regarding the location of Latin America during the Cold War.
Date: Wednesday, January 16, 2013
Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: History Department Lounge, 3703 Wesley W. Posvar Hall, University of Pittsburgh

"Beyond Borders? Amerindian Insurgent Poetics and the Spatial Politics of Resistance," a lecture by Hannah Burdette (PhD candidate and Andrew Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellow, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh)
Interdisciplinary Ink presents this talk by Ms. Burdette. The last two decades of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st centuries have been marked by a notable increase in indigenous political action as well as an outpouring of texts produced by Native authors and poets. Amerindians from Alaska to Chile are increasingly raising their voices and reclaiming the right to represent themselves, in both a political and a discursive sense. Within this context, poetic writing constitutes a key weapon, as it helps to render subjugated knowledges visible and to envision alternatives to modernity/coloniality. This paper explores the intersection between indigenous literature and social movements through the framework of what I call insurgent poetics: a mode of writing that narrates and/or performs acts of resistance and partakes in the struggle for intellectual and political sovereignty. Foregrounding the spatial and geopolitical dimensions of indigenous interventions, I pose a series of questions regarding the production and reception of Amerindian literatures today.

Presentation will be in Spanish.
