"Reescritura y Colonialidad: Crítica Genética de Cubagua, de Enrique Bernardo Núñez," a lecture by Alejandro Bruzual (Universidad Central de Venezuela/ Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos (CELARG)

Some scholars consider Cubagua (1931), written by Enrique Bernardo Núñez (1895--1964), to be a singular precursor of the new novel associated with the Latin American literary boom of 1960--80. Among its original innovations is a masterfully crafted counterpoint of parallel colonial and postcolonial plots. Nuñez repeatedly rewrote the novel during a period of three decades. Many versions include significant changes, with important aesthetic and political connotations. Alejandro Bruzual has produced the first critical edition of this emblematic work, forthcoming by Biblioteca Ayacucho, the prestigious collection of Latin American classics, and is author of El rostro de Prometeo resistente, a book on Che Guevara's cinematographic presence. He is also an accomplished poet and an eminent musicologist who has published widely on classical guitar music. Alejandro Bruzual is a professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and a researcher at the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos. He obtained his Ph.D. on Latin American Literature at the University of Pittsburgh.
