3rd Annual Americas-in-Concert: Jazz
Featuring The Eric Mintel Quartet (Eric Mintel [Piano], Nelson Hill [Flute, Alto & Soprano Sax], Dave Antonow [Electric Bass], and Dave Mohn [Drums])
The Philadelphia-based Eric Mintel Quartet, featuring the band's namesake and renowned jazz pianist and composer, will captivate Pittsburgh audiences of all ages with their fresh and invigorating new arrangements of classic jazz standards, original songs by Mintel, and the rarely heard music of jazz great Dave Brubeck. The concert is free and open to the public, and seating is limited and available on a first come basis.
This is the third year that Pittsburgh Cardiovascular Institute and Med Health Services are sponsoring "The Americas—In Concert" event, which they hope to make a long-lasting Pittsburgh tradition. The annual concerts are designed to promote the development of local and national professional musicians, while exposing Pittsburgh's general public to the musical works of all of the America's, from North to South

In conjunction with the "Americas in Concert" Series, the Eric Mintel Quartet is offering a Jazz Workshop to be held prior to the concert. The workshop will focus on: Jazz Theory, Ensemble Performance, Public Performance, Jazz Rhythms Studies (including Latin styles, Swing, Funk, Hip Hop, and Odd Meter), Roles of Instruments in the Small Ensemble, Live Performance and Stage Presence Tips, and Music Business Insight.
The workshop is free.

The Impact of Tomás Gutierrez Alea on the Work and Lives of Latin Americanist Scholars: An Intimate Dialogue
In 1973, The New York Times listed "Memories of Underdevelopment" (Tomas Gutierrez, 1968) among the year's ten best films. US critics and scholars acclaimed the film with praise. The National Society of Film Critics offered Gutierrez a special award, but the US government denied him a visa, preventing the director from attending the ceremony. Despite this event and the ongoing economic and cultural blockade of the island, Cuban Cinema and its cultural productions had been continually succeeding in breaking through the cultural blockade and getting the attention of scholars, film makers, film critics and the general public. In this sense, the work of Gutierrez Alea not only impacted the critical thinking of numerous intellectuals, but also contributed to their own personal views about the revolution, race, and social inequalities.
The goal of this dialogue is to discuss the influence of Gutierrez Alea's films on the work and lives of Latin American scholars from an intimate perspective. This event constitutes part of Amigos del Cine Latinoamericano Fall 2010 homage to Cuban Film production through the work of Tomás Gutierrez Alea, an essential figure in the development of Latin American Cinema during the 20th Century.

· Welcome by Kathleen Musante DeWalt (Director, Center for Latin American Studies)
· Moderator: Mildred López (PhD student, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature and Center for Latin American Studies)
· John Beverley (Professor, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures). His work focuses on testimonio, film and the Cuban Revolution. Prof. Beverley will share with us how Gutierrez Alea's work impacted his views on the revolution.
· Jerome Branch (Professor, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures). His work focuses on topics of afro-negritud in the Caribbean. Prof. Branch will be sharing with us the impact Gutierrez Alea's work had on issues of race (negritude).
· Mirtha Ibarra (Film Director and wife of Gutierrez Alea) will introduce TITON, FROM HAVANA TO GUANTANAMERA, the documentary that she directed on the life and work of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea.

The Huellas Latinas Concert Series
Christopher Columbus' Second Voyage: Music of Puerto Rico!
The Huellas Latinas Concert Series is pleased to announce the second concert of its series on Latin American and Spanish music. This concert will feature classical and popular music from "The Enchanted Isle." The first half will concentrate on art songs from composers Narciso Figueroa, Jack Delano, and Ernesto Cordero; while the second half will focus on popular music from Rafael Hernández, Luis R. Miranda, and others. The concert will commemorate the 517th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in Puerto Rico on November 19, 1493.

Undergraduate Internship Opportunity
The School of Arts and Sciences has approved undergraduate internship opportunities through the Center for Latin American Studies. Student interns will work with the Center's outreach coordinator to develop lessons on Latin America for presentation in kindergarten through high school (K-12) classrooms as part of the Center's School Visit Program. Interns play an important role in sharing Latin American resources with a wide variety of local schools in the Pittsburgh area. This is a very valuable cross-cultural experience for all parties involved. Interns are required to work an average of 10 hours per week preparing and presenting to K-12 classes.
The internship is equivalent to a 3 credit course and may apply toward the certificate in Latin American Studies. The internship option is listed at School of Arts and Sciences webpage at: http://www.as.pitt.edu/undergraduate/experience/internships/ under the section marked foreign language internship opportunities.
Interested candidates should apply by submitting:

Fall 2011 Predoctoral/ Postdoctoral Fellowship in Latin American Studies, Lehigh University
Application Deadline: November 29, 2010
The College of Arts and Sciences and the Latin American Studies Program at Lehigh University invite Ph.D. candidates specializing in Latin America, with a clear contemporary Latin American cultural studies focus, to apply for a two-year predoctoral / postdoctoral fellowship, beginning Fall 2011. Applications are welcome from candidates whose research concentrates in any of the following areas: social movements, identity (gender, ethnic, religious, etc.), transnational migration, and/or urbanization. Successful candidates will also demonstrate breadth and depth of cultural and Spanish language experience, and ability to create and offer a Latin American Studies introductory course.
Terms
The two-year award carries a stipend of $25,000 in the first year. It is renewable for the second year, with a $40,000 salary, provided the fellow completes his/her Ph.D. in time to meet all requirements for the home institution's spring graduation. The fellowship also carries up to $1,500 in moving expenses and $1,500 in research/travel support in the first year and $3,000 in the second year.
Eligibility
Completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation, by May 15, 2011. Demonstrated potential to complete all Ph.D. requirements in time for Spring 2012 graduation.
Conditions
Renewal of award
Renewal of the award depends on the predoctoral fellow's completion of all Ph.D. requirements in time for Spring 2012 graduation and meeting all expectations below.
Residence and employment
The fellow must be in residence at the University for the duration of the award period. He/she may accept no employment, fellowships, or consulting obligations during the term of the fellowship.
Teaching load
One course during the first year as a doctoral candidate and 2 courses during the second year as a postdoctoral fellow.
The fellow is expected to design and teach an introductory course to Latin American Studies each year.
Other expectations
Contribution to programming of Latin American Studies events and lectures.
Active presence on campus and establishment of links with faculty and students.
Periodic presentations of the fellow's research to the larger Lehigh academic community.
