LatinX & Proud! round two: tomorrow with poet Carlos Andrés Gómez

Latinx & Proud! Reading Series  with Carlos Andrés Gómez   Tuesday, January 21 7 p.m.  City of Asylum @ Alphabet City 40 W. North Avenue FREE!     Click here for free tickets!   Carlos Andrés Gómez is widely known for his viral poems, "Where are you really from?" and "What Latino Looks Like," which have garnered millions of views online. Carlos' poetry is not only captivating, but also acts as a lightning rod for change—in the individual but also in the world, particularly in the narrow societal norms that constrain men, hurt women, and limit us all.  Carlos' voice is full of power and has the ability to make audiences laugh, cry, and especially hope. We're deeply honored to host Carlos as he performs on the Alphabet City stage for the first time.  Carlos will be joined by powerhouse poets Diannely Antigua, Juno Nascimento, & Rosa Iris Diendomi.      Carlos Andrés Gómez is a Colombian American poet from New York City & the author of Hijito (ee-HEE-toe), winner of the Broken River Prize & the memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood.  A star of HBO's Def Poetry Jam & TV One's Verses & Flow. Gómez has also partnered with John Legend on Senior Orientation, a program to counteract bullying & champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. In Mexico City, the government operates fewer than 45 emergency ambulances for a population of 9 million. This has spawned an underground industry of for-profit ambulances often run by people with little or no training or certification. An exception in this ethically fraught, cutthroat industry, the Ochoa family struggles to keep their financial needs from jeopardizing the people in their care. When a crackdown by corrupt police pushes the family into greater hardship, they face increasing moral dilemmas even as they continue providing essential emergency medical services.
