Latinx & Proud! Reading Series  with Carlos Andrés Gómez   Tuesday, January 21 7 p.m.  City of Asylum @ Alphabet City 40 W. North Avenue FREE!     Click here for free tickets!   Carlos Andrés Gómez is widely known for his viral poems, "Where are you really from?" and "What Latino Looks Like," which have garnered millions of views online. Carlos' poetry is not only captivating, but also acts as a lightning rod for change—in the individual but also in the world, particularly in the narrow societal norms that constrain men, hurt women, and limit us all.  Carlos' voice is full of power and has the ability to make audiences laugh, cry, and especially hope. We're deeply honored to host Carlos as he performs on the Alphabet City stage for the first time.  Carlos will be joined by powerhouse poets Diannely Antigua, Juno Nascimento, & Rosa Iris Diendomi.      Carlos Andrés Gómez is a Colombian American poet from New York City & the author of Hijito (ee-HEE-toe), winner of the Broken River Prize & the memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood.  A star of HBO's Def Poetry Jam & TV One's Verses & Flow. Gómez has also partnered with John Legend on Senior Orientation, a program to counteract bullying & champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. Carlos has been featured on NPR, TEDx, NBC News, The New York Times, People en Español, Forbes, and BuzzFeed just to name a few.    Click here for free tickets!   "The Latinx & Proud! Reading Series is a statement that we are here and our stories will be heard. Through this series we aim to highlight the many and diverse voices contained within the word "Latinx," and continue to defy any limiting definitions of what that identity can be." —Malcolm Friend, Author of Our Bruises Kept Singing Purple (Inlandia Books, 2018) and Latinx & Proud! advisory board member   The mission of the Latinx & Proud! Reading Series is to incite conversation, empower, & amplify the Latinx community in Pittsburgh, PA & beyond. Midnight Family: Fri, Jan 3 to Thu, Jan 9

Director: Luke Lorenzten

2019 / 81 min. / DCP

In Mexico City, the government operates fewer than 45 emergency ambulances for a population of 9 million. This has spawned an underground industry of for-profit ambulances often run by people with little or no training or certification. An exception in this ethically fraught, cutthroat industry, the Ochoa family struggles to keep their financial needs from jeopardizing the people in their care. When a crackdown by corrupt police pushes the family into greater hardship, they face increasing moral dilemmas even as they continue providing essential emergency medical services.

"Outstanding... Fantastically shot by the director Luke Lorentzen, the documentary develops an urgency that suits the life-or-death stakes onscreen. By turns terrifying and exhilarating, “Midnight Family” unfolds with such velocity that it may take a while for your ethical doubts to catch up to what’s happening. When they do, they leave you gasping."
– Manohla Dargis, New York Times Critics’ Pick

Audiences are encouraged to engage with the work, and experience theater's power to spark meaningful dialogue about complex issues. Simona's father is a mystery.
