Dental Prevention - Hispanic Dental Association

On Saturday January 28 we will be having representatives from the Hispanic Dental Association of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine coming to the Birmingham Clinic. They will be providing dental prevention care to children and adults. As scheduled there will be a free pediatric immunizations clinic provided by SALUD PARA NIÑOS from the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Feliz Navidad, Pittsburgh!

Coro Latinoamericano-Pittsburgh To Perform  Holiday Carols and
Favorite Music of the Season in Colorful Latin-American Style

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 1, 2011) – Feliz Navidad, Pittsburgh! Friends and neighbors throughout the region will have an opportunity to celebrate the holidays in Latin American style with Coro Latinoamericano-Pittsburgh (Latin American Choir of Pittsburgh). Performing holiday carols and the favorite musical selections and rhythms of the season, Coro Latinoamericano  will present its annual holiday concert, themed "Feliz Navidad, Pittsburgh!" 7:30 p.m.,  Sat., Dec. 10,  2011, Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, campus of the University of Pittsburgh, Oakland.  Admission: donation.  Information:  corolapgh@gmail.com or 412-661-1211.

Promoting joy and cheer throughout the city and beyond, Coro Latinoamericano and  guest artists will perform a variety of carols and colorful seasonal selections with lyrics in Spanish, Portuguese or other languages of the Americas.  Coro Latinoamericano will also  present its annual COROLA Award to an outstanding member of the community who has contributed to the cultural enrichment and wellbeing of the region.

Program and Artists

CORO LATINOAMERICANO-PITTSBURGH

Leading Coro Latinoamericano in song will be Acting Music Director Dr. Meredith Armbrust who has served, during her career in music, as a vocalist, a soloist, an educator and a director.  Dr. Armbrust  has participated in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops and has sung with world renowned conductors including James Levine, Bernard Haitink, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Sir Colin Davis.  As a soprano soloist, she performed in Beethoven's Choral Fantasy for the 2003 Opening Night for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and later that year at Carnegie Hall. She  sang as a soloist with the Boston Pops and performed under the direction of Keith Lockhart, John Williams, and others.  Additionally, she  was selected to perform in televised programs with the Boston Pops . She contributed to a Boston Pops Christmas Pops  recording and the soundtrack of the movie Mystic River, as well as performed with Bosto

According to Coro members, "Feliz Navidad, Pittsburgh!" promises to capture attention with an "undoubtedly lively, often sentimental, frequently moving and always inspirational" selection of songs of the season – A Adorar Al Niño, Aguinaldo Margariteño (Venezuelan folksong), Alegria (Traditional), Boas Festas (Assis Valente), Cantar (Jay Althouse), Feliz Navidad (Jose Feliciano) and Noche de Paz (Franz Gruber) -- as  well as newer, locally composed, original holiday music such as Navidad Para Todos by Ernesto Contenti who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has resided in Pittsburgh for many years.

Soloists and guest artists will include Coro Latinoamericano pianist Aida Olarte who was born in Bogota Colombia, and is a newcomer to Pittsburgh; the engaging sextet known as  Tone/Overtone and the Undertones; and the endearing Coro Juvenil Latinoamericano de Pittsburgh (Latin American Children's choir).

PIANIST AIDA OLARTE

Aida Olarte was born in Bogota, Colombia. At age seven, she began studying piano at the Conservatorio de Musica de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. After earning her high school diploma, she won a scholarship offered by the ICETEX Instituto Colombiano de Credito Educativo y Estudios Tecnicos en el Exterior to the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldan in Havana, Cuba. She recently completed requirements for her Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade College, studying piano with Dr. Alan Ngim. In fall 2011, she began attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh on scholarship to earn her Bachelor's degree in piano performance.

Olarte has played collaborative recitals throughout Bogota, Colombia, and as a soloist with the Orquesta Filarmonica de Cundinamarca also in Bogota. At Miami Dade College, she performed as a piano soloist in the student and honor's recitals, as an accompaniment for voice students, in chamber music ensembles and in the orchestra for the musical theater productions.

TONE/OVERTONE and the UNDERTONES

Tone/Overtone is composed of Rachel Rue, flute, and Keith Cochran, accordion.  The Undertones feature vocalists Barbara and Rick Johnson and Coro Latinoamericano members Ernesto Contenti and Michele Rothert.  Together, Tone/Overtone and the Undertones will perform:
► Que Niño Es Este? (William Dix, Angel Mergal), also known as What Child is This? in Spanish set to the melody of Greensleeves
► El Regalo (The Gift),  composed by Ernesto Contenti.

CORO JUVENIL LATINOAMERICANO DE PITTSBURGH

Returning to the stage, again this year by popular demand, will be Coro Juvenil Latinoamericano de Pittsburgh – the children's Latin American choir lead by Founder and Director Rachel Matos.  Representing a range of nationalities and backgrounds, the children take pride in learning and singing together the music of Latin America.

The programs of Coro Latinoamericano-Pittsburgh are made possible through the donations, grants and in-kind services of many friends and benefactors. Based in Pittsburgh, PA, Coro Latinoamericano-Pittsburgh is a Latin American choir and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to "build bridges among the Americas" through choral music, cultural education and good will.  Composed of 20-25 men and women born in countries and cities afar and near, Coro Latinoamericano-Pittsburgh is one of only a few choirs of its kind nationwide.
