“Dialogues” is an annual event at Chatham University’s MFA program that brings together writers in conversation around socially relevant themes, and offers a platform to showcase their creative work for the public. Dialogues 2022 is themed Home.

The 2022 program features a live conversation with poets Malcolm Friend, Adriana Ramirez, & Angela Velez—writers whose work heavily centers ideas of home and identity-creation. In addition to reading their own work, our featured writers will discuss Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, a seminal text in the exploration of home. The House on Mango Street is also Chatham University’s 2022 Big Read text. Learn more.

· Undergraduate Research Assistant Opportunity

o Work as a research assistant (RA) for a project that explores empowering Black, Latinx, and Indigenous middle school girls in learning computer science topics. This project focuses on positioning learners as techno-social activists, and creators of technology.

o  RAs would be involved in running after school programs with our learners. We encourage women and non-binary undergraduates from Black, Latinx, and Indigenous backgrounds to apply for this position. Applicants can send their resume to me at angelast@andrew.cmu.edu. 

• Addiction Science Summer Internships- Work with NIDA scientists for 8 weeks at various universities. $15/hr with transportation and lodging.

Rob – the eldest son of a Puerto Rican-born father and Costa Rican mother whose struggle to achieve the American Dream he sought to preserve and emulate by practicing immigration law – died in July 2013 following a rafting accident in a state park near the University of Pittsburgh, where he planned to pursue his law degree. He was 22. In a subsequent newspaper obituary, friends memorialized him as the type of achiever who would've grown up to be elected president. We hope everyone had a great first week of classes and you're getting into the regular swing of things as the rest of the semester kicks off! 

 

Here are a couple of SALSA updates for y'all:

 

1. We have our FIRST event of the spring semester this Wednesday (1/26) from 6-7pm!!! It's gonna be a virtual game night where you can come by, play some games, chill out, and have fun :D

2.  Our spring calendar is up! We have so many great things planned (Churro fundraiser, Asada, LatinX formal, speed friending, cafecitos, etc) and you do not want to miss out bc you didn't know :(

4. ROLLCALL FOR GRADUATING SENIORS!!! We're looking for graduating seniors to be speakers for Cena a Las Seis this semester!! Cena a Las Seis provides an opportunity to hear from a senior Hispanic voice in an open, informal setting. It's centered around the idea that if a senior student shares his/her story among peers bonding over similar experiences and meals, a sense of community will root itself at the heart of that dinner. The graduating senior will speak at the event about anything they wish to give their two cents on or would like to share with others. The speech is also accompanied by any form of visual/audio that helps bring the speaker's story to life like a powerpoint, instrument, or pictures.

 

If you are interested and think this is perfect for you or know a senior who would like to host a Cena, sign up using THIS form!!! SALSA will provide food of the speaker's choosing. This is a passion project of mine and the speakers who have gone in the past have really enjoyed it so please don't hesitate to fill out the form or ask me any questions!

Yale Conservation Scholars - Application Deadline January 31st!

We are happy to announce that we are accepting applications for the Yale Conservation Scholars - Early Leadership Initiative! Please pass this announcement on to any students who might be interested. 

 

The priority application date is Monday, January 10th. All applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis after this date until January 31st at 11:59 pm EST.

Led by Dr. Dorceta Taylor, Program Director and Principal Investigator, the Yale Conservation Scholars – Early Leadership Initiative (YCS- ELI) was formerly known as the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at University of Michigan/Yale School of the Environment. YCS-ELI is a summer opportunity for undergraduates traditionally underrepresented in the conservation field and who are interested in careers in the sector.
