CLAS Weekly Update - 01/11/2013

Center for Latin American Studies

Upcoming Events

Reminder: April 2013 CLAS Graduates

In order to have the Latin American Studies certificate/related concentration recorded on the transcripts of students who finish the certificate program, the University requires each student to complete a Certificate Graduation Application. This application is separate from the form that you will complete for your degree/major.

Those graduating in April 2013 have a deadline of Thursday, January 17, 2013 to complete a Certificate Graduation Application form without paying a late fee.

Attention undergraduates: please remember to submit 2 research papers/projects that clearly demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Latin American issues in at least two different academic disciplines. These papers may be assignments that are submitted as part of your coursework, such as final term papers reflecting a significant command of the subject. If a research paper is completed that is clearly interdisciplinary in nature, it may be considered instead of the two separate papers. Works may be submitted at any point, but must be submitted to CLAS no later than the last semester before graduation.

Late applications are accepted after the deadline but the University will impose a late fee. The amount of the fee increases with the delay in submission.

Please see Julian Asenjo (4207 Posvar Hall) for an application or drop by our offices (4200 Posvar Hall) to pick one up. Papers and graduation applications should be submitted to the attention of Julian Asenjo, CLAS Academic Advisor.

Lectures

"Local Struggles, Transnational Frameworks: The Congress for Cultural Freedom and the Cultural Cold War in Latin America, 1950s-1960s," a lecture by Jorge Nállim (Associate Professor of History, University of Manitoba)

This presentation will focus on the history of the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) in Latin America during the 1950s-1960s. The CCF was an international anti-communist organization of intellectuals created in 1950 as part of American Cold War cultural policy, funded and supported by the United States through different channels. The presentation will discuss the CCF's networks in Latin Americana (national branches, affiliated individuals, publications), placing them within new theoretical frameworks regarding the location of Latin America during the Cold War.

Date: Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Time: 4:00 p.m.

Location: History Department Lounge, 3703 Wesley W. Posvar Hall, University of Pittsburgh

"Beyond Borders? Amerindian Insurgent Poetics and the Spatial Politics of Resistance," a lecture by Hannah Burdette (PhD candidate and Andrew Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellow, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh)

Interdisciplinary Ink presents this talk by Ms. Burdette. The last two decades of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st centuries have been marked by a notable increase in indigenous political action as well as an outpouring of texts produced by Native authors and poets. Amerindians from Alaska to Chile are increasingly raising their voices and reclaiming the right to represent themselves, in both a political and a discursive sense. Within this context, poetic writing constitutes a key weapon, as it helps to render subjugated knowledges visible and to envision alternatives to modernity/coloniality. This paper explores the intersection between indigenous literature and social movements through the framework of what I call insurgent poetics: a mode of writing that narrates and/or performs acts of resistance and partakes in the struggle for intellectual and political sovereignty. Foregrounding the spatial and geopolitical dimensions of indigenous interventions, I pose a series of questions regarding the production and reception of Amerindian literatures today.

Presentation will be in Spanish.

The 2013 Maya Meetings “The Art of Maya Architecture: Cosmology and Dynasty in the Built Environment”, University of Texas at Austin

Dates: January 15-19, 2013

The Maya Meetings return to Austin on January 2013 for five days of workshops and symposium.

The 2013 Maya Meetings will explore new ideas about the art and meaning of ancient Maya architectural decoration and design. The last several years of archaeological research in the Maya region has revealed many examples of ornate temple decoration, as well as important reconsiderations of the symbolism and significance of buildings long known to archaeologists and art historians. Using archaeology, iconography, epigraphy, and the study of architectural forms, the Maya Meetings will focus on the built environment as expressions of ritual, cosmological and political space. This year we will have a number of compelling presenters, including several rising scholars in the field of Maya research.

The Maya Meetings Workshops: The San Jacinto Conference Center is located on the first floor of the San Jacinto Residence Hall (SJH) on the corner of 21st Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. Entrances can be found on 21st Street and facing the Brazos Parking Garage.

The Maya Meetings Symposium: The 2013 Maya Meetings Keynote address, opening reception and Lienzo de Quauhquechollan Exhibition location venue is the ART Building (ART) 1.102 room. The Venue ART is located at 2301 San Jacinto BLVD. Austin, TX 78712.

Call for Conference Papers

The 16th Annual Hispanic and Lusophone Studies Syposium at Ohio State University

Date: April 5-6, 2012

This year’s graduate student organized symposium will resemble the form of an international seminar, in that all presenters will form part of a collective effort to move toward a response of two central problematics involving the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds: Memory/history and universality, local knowledge and global power. The symposium will be divided along these two lines of thought, where we will encourage students of Latin American, Indigenous, Iberian, Colonial, Transatlantic, Cultural, Popular Music, Gender and Sexuality, Queer, Film, Caribbean, and Latino Studies to enter into a transdisciplinary and transatlantic dialogue. Within each theme, panels will be formed from thematic similarities. The Spanish and Portuguese Department of The Ohio State University will provide a moderator and commentator for each panel. Rather than following the traditional 20 minute form of presenting a paper, we are asking presenters to follow a more recent structure occurring at select conferences that limits the presentation to a fifteen minute summary of their main arguments, saving the details for the debate and dialogue that the commentator and moderator will facilitate in each panel. In addition, we are encouraging presenters to use multimedia resources such as PowerPoint and Prezi to make the symposium more dynamic. Finally, because the purpose of this symposium is to collectively work toward refining our thinking regarding the problematics proposed, we are asking that each presenter participate in the discussion and dialogue of each panel within their particular problematic, because it is from those conversations that conclusions will be reached. The final panel of the entire symposium will be made up of a presentation by the moderators of each session giving a summary of the conclusions that arose in their session in the hopes of approximating a response to the problematics that the conference has attempted to address.

Presentations may be made in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Please join in this conversation and celebration of Hispanic and Lusophone cultures from a variety of time periods. Abstracts and panel proposals must be at most 250 words. They may be submitted in .pdf, .ps, .doc, or .rtf attachments. Submissions are anonymous. The body of the e-mail should contain the following information: title of the paper/panel proposal, area of specialization, name, postal address, e-mail, and affiliation of the author(s) (hard copy submissions should include the information above on a separate sheet). The subject of the email should include the terms “Literatures and Cultures.”

Please submit abstracts/proposals to symposium_sppo@osu.edu by December 14, 2012

Cost:

*Conference fee for accepted presenters is $35 Graduate Students, $50 Faculty.

**Early registration fee is $25 Graduate Students, $40 Faculty, if submitted by March 8th, 2013.
