CLAS Graduate Student Field Research Grants
The purpose of this program is to make it possible for CLAS graduate students to carry out short-term field research directly relevant to the Latin American/Caribbean region in order to acquire as profound and intimate knowledge as possible of language, culture, and geography; to gather research data; and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in the field.
PLEASE NOTE: These grants are NOT to be used for dissertation research.
Deadline: January 17, 2012 for the CLAS Field Research Competition:
Pitt in Ecuador Program
Students may choose to apply for one of two 4-week options in either June or July or an 8 week option in both June/July.
This is a FLASF approved program for graduate students at all levels of Quechua.
It is also a FLASF approved program for undergraduate students pursuing Quechua at the intermediate or advanced levels.

Lectures
“Human Security and Indigenous Peoples: Lessons from Southern Africa,” a lecture by Robert Hitchcock (Michigan State University)
Dr. Robert Hitchcock (BA, University of California-Santa Barbara, MA, Ph.D. Anthropology, University of New Mexico, 1982) is a professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA. He has worked with San peoples in Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe for the past 30 years. In addition, he has worked with indigenous peoples in Guatemala, Hawaii, California, Canada, the Great Plains, and the southwest, as well as with various groups in eastern and central Africa (e.g. in Somalia, Uganda, and Gabon). In 1996 he published Kalahari Communities: Bushmen and the Politics of the Environment in Southern Africa (IWGIA, Copenhagen, 1996). He is the co-editor (with Megan Biesele and Peter Schweitzer of Hunters and Gatherers in the Modern World: Conflict, Resistance, and Self-Determination (Berghahn Books, 2000). In 2002, he co-edited a book with Alan Osborn: Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East: Struggles to Survive and Thrive (Greenwood, 2002) and he is the co-editor, with Diana Vinding, of Indigenous Peoples' Rights in Southern Africa (IWGIA, 2004). Currently, he is doing a book on indigenous peoples' rights for Routledge and, with Megan Biesele, a book on the Ju/’hoansi of Nyae Nyae, Namibia for Berghahn. Hitchcock has worked for IWGIA on the evaluation of programs aimed at assisting San peoples in Botswana. He is a member of the Board and past co-president of the Kalahari Peoples Fund (KPF), an advocacy organization that provides assistance to San, Nama, and other peoples of southern Africa. He is also a member of the Panel of Environmental Experts for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, the largest water project in Africa. At present, Hitchcock is working with Sudanese and Ogoni refugees who have resettled in the Great Plains of the United States, and with Native Americans involved in resource management programs.

Present Situation in Colombia by Isaac Beachy
Isaac Beachy has recently returned from living and working with a Colombian peace community for the past two years in rural Colombia. He was there working with the Fellowship of Reconciliation doing accompaniment work. This work has been needed due to the repression experienced by many Colombians, including labor leaders, seeking justice there. Mr. Beachy will share his experiences and provide an update on the situation in Colombia at a luncheon meeting which is open to the public. NO RSVP's required.

The Inter-American Foundation Grassroots Development Fellowship Program
The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) was created in 1969 by the United States Congress to fund the self-help initiatives of the organized poor in Latin America and the Caribbean and the groups that directly support them. To complement its work, the IAF has reinstated its Fellowships for candidates for Ph.D. degrees from United States universities as they conduct their dissertation research. IAF's Fellowships are intended to increase awareness of grassroots development efforts while building a community of professionals and scholars knowledgeable in the subject.
